Sport & Health
Where Every Child has a Sporting Chance
Our team recognises that sport and physical education is vital to the holistic development of young people, fostering their physical, social and emotional health and helping us with our Vision of Respect, Excellence, Aspiration and Determination.
At Malorees, we are very fortunate to have not only two school playgrounds, but also a wonderful field where children can exercise, enjoy games and explore.
We are proud that so many of our children do well in competitive sports, but we also seek to give EVERY child the opportunity to take part in one of the various inter-school sporting events organised around Brent and beyond.
We work closely with Harris Lowe Academy Sports Partnership and many local community sports providers, including Connie Henry’s Track Academy, Kilburn Cosmos, Queens Park Sharks, Highgate Harriers, Brent Dolphins and City of Westminster Swimming Club, amongst others, to promote activity and excellence both in, and outside of school.
Sporting Activities
Engaging activities offered to our Junior and Infant children include football, netball, cycling, yoga, cross-country, athletics, cricket, tennis, gymnastics, archery, golf and tag rugby, New Age Kurling and Boccia, amongst others.
Girls Active Project
We are proud to be a part of the Girls Active Project.
Throughout its history, the Youth Sport Trust has sought to find ways to ensure that physical education (PE), sport and physical activity are relevant and motivating for girls.
This project is focused on helping schools understand what motivates girls to take part, enabling teachers to work with girls – through consultation and leadership – to make the necessary changes to our PE, sport and physical activity provision.
There are six key principles that underpin effective practice in engaging girls in PE, sport and physical activity. These have positive relationships at their core and should be supported by whole school policies and practice.
- Take a long-term approach to engaging girls
- Put developing self-confidence at the heart of PE
- Make PE and sport relevant to girls' lives
- Recognise the power of friends to drive progress
- Develop role models for the future
- Empower girls to design and deliver PE and sport.
Excellence in swimming
We are very proud of our excellence in swimming.
Year 4 children take swimming lessons at Willesden Sports Centre as part of the curriculum and we, unlike many schools, commit to an hour of swimming each week throughout the entire year.
Our swimming cohort regularly achieves in excess of an 85% success rate for children capable of swimming 25m unaided. This compares to Brent schools at around 20% and nationally the success rate is just above 50% currently.
Children who do not achieve the government’s standard are offered financial assistance for further lessons and those that excel are guided towards our local swimming clubs. We have been very fortunate over the last 3 years to have the support of the Maqam Centre who have provided free swimming lessons to children who we identify as needing additional support.
Additionally, Malorees leads the way in organising the annual Brent Swimming Gala, winning the title 5 times in the last 6 years.
Our Gymrun assessment Scheme
At Malorees we have adopted the Gymrun Assessment Scheme to motivate and measure the progress of our children on a wider scale. Malorees was chosen by London Sport to pilot the scheme and as a result we produced the following video which is used nationally to promote the scheme.

Bikeability
We work annually with Brent Council, in partnership with Cycling Instructor Ltd, to promote cycling within our school community. All training is delivered to the Bikeability national standard and bikes and helmets are provided for children who do not have their own.

Chess in School
Chess plays a vital role in our school curriculum, serving not only as an engaging activity but also as a powerful educational tool. By dedicating one hour each week throughout the year to chess to targeted year groups, we are investing in the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills. Chess challenges students to think ahead, evaluate options, and make thoughtful decisions — qualities that extend far beyond the chessboard and enrich their learning in other subjects as well as their daily lives.
The structured inclusion of chess also fosters patience, resilience, and focus. Students quickly learn that every move has consequences, and that success often comes from persistence and careful planning. This weekly exposure ensures consistency, helping pupils steadily build confidence and competence while cultivating a growth mindset. It also creates a level playing field, where students of all abilities can shine and support one another in developing their skills.
Our commitment to chess over several years has shown outstanding results, with our school proudly holding the titles of London Chess Classic and Brent Chess League Champions. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of both students and staff, and it highlights the benefits of embedding chess deeply within our curriculum. Beyond trophies and titles, however, our greatest success lies in equipping students with lifelong skills — logical reasoning, concentration, and creativity — that will serve them in academics, careers, and personal growth.
Sport in Our Community
Every year, for the the last 6 years, hundreds of parents and teachers have taken part in the London Winter 10km Run and the Blenheim Palace Triathlon. A great way to bring our community together.
